That language matches the meta description of the page itself — "FREE returns. 100% Satisfaction Guarantee/Return Policy" — and it sets the customer-facing tone.

In practice, the satisfaction guarantee gives way to the category clock the moment you cross a calendar deadline. Days are counted from the original purchase date (in store) or the delivery date (online), not from when you opened the box. There is no published holiday-extension carve-out on the policy page, so if you buy a printer on December 5 and return it January 4, you are five days late on the 14-day Technology window — even though the calendar suggests "around the holidays." Treat the windows literally.

The other thing worth understanding before you head to the store: the 14-day Technology, Furniture, and Software windows are tight by big-box standards. Best Buy gives Total Tech members 60 days. Amazon gives most electronics 30 days. Walmart gives 30 days on most electronics. Office supplies: 90 days, unopened, original packaging

The 90-day window applies to the broadest category in the store: paper, pens, notebooks, folders, binders, tape, staplers, sticky notes, basic desk accessories, mailing supplies, and most school supplies. To qualify for a full refund, the item must be unopened and in original packaging. A binder you tore the shrink wrap off of, a notebook you wrote in, a ream of paper you cracked open — all technically fall outside the "unopened" requirement.

In practice, Office Depot store associates exercise judgment on lightly-handled items. A returned pen pack with a torn outer sleeve but the individual pens intact is usually processed without resistance. A binder with a marker scuff on the cover is harder. The cleaner the condition, the faster the refund. If you opened the package, save the receipt and bring it within the 90 days regardless — the worst answer at the counter is "no," and the answer is often "yes" for items that retail under $30.

Ink and toner: 30 days, unopened, original packaging

Ink and toner cartridges get their own 30-day window — half the general office-supplies window, twice the technology window. The "unopened, original packaging" requirement is enforced more strictly here than for office supplies because cartridges are a verified ink-and-toner recycling category. Office Depot's recycling program will take cartridges that are opened or empty, but those are recycled for rewards points, not refunded.

A cartridge you bought, opened, installed, and ran for 10 pages is not returnable for refund. A cartridge sitting in your office for 29 days unopened is. A cartridge sitting in your office for 31 days unopened, even with the receipt, is past the published window. Technology and electronics: 14 days, like-new condition

The 14-day Technology window covers laptops, desktops, monitors, printers, scanners, calculators, headphones, hard drives, flash drives, networking equipment, tablets, e-readers, and wearable tech. The condition requirement is stricter than office supplies: the item must be in original packaging with the UPC code intact and in like-new condition. That means the box, the foam inserts, the manuals, the cables, and the accessories all need to come back.

Furniture: 14 days, unassembled, all parts and manuals

Office Depot's furniture window matches the technology window at 14 days, but adds the most onerous condition requirement of the entire policy: unassembled and in original packaging with UPC code, including all parts and manuals. If you assembled the desk, you almost certainly cannot return it.

This rule is the reason most furniture returns get denied. Office Depot sells desks, office chairs, bookcases, filing cabinets, conference tables, standing desks, and a dozen other large items. Customers buy them, take them home, build them, decide they don't like them, and discover that the policy explicitly bars assembled returns. The packaging requirement also means the original box matters — many shoppers throw the box out the day after assembly, which forfeits the option to return.

If you buy furniture from Office Depot:

  1. Inspect the box for visible damage before bringing it home.
  2. Open the box and check that all parts are present before you start assembly.
  3. Set a calendar reminder for day 13 to decide whether the piece is staying.
  4. If you might return it, keep the original packaging until the 14 days expire.

For oversize items delivered by truck, the carrier brings the box to the threshold. Software, CDs, DVDs and video games: 14 days, unopened only

Office Depot still sells boxed software, music CDs, movie DVDs, and physical video games. All four fall into a single 14-day window with the strictest possible condition rule: the package must be unopened. There is no equivalent of a "30-day-open-box" exception.

Without an original receipt, software, CDs, DVDs, and video games are eligible only for an exact-item exchange — same SKU, swapped for an identical sealed copy. You cannot return an unopened DVD without a receipt and walk out with cash or a return card. This rule predates the streaming era and reflects publisher anti-piracy requirements: once the shrink wrap is broken, the disc cannot be resold.

Office Depot Brand products: Anytime (excluding ink and toner)

This is the most generous and least-publicized line in the entire policy. Anything carrying the Office Depot® brand label — paper, pens, sticky notes, file folders, desk organizers, basic chairs, storage bins, and dozens of other house-brand SKUs — can be returned anytime, with no published deadline. The only category excluded is Office Depot brand ink and toner, which falls back to the 30-day ink rule.

A few things worth knowing about how the Anytime guarantee works in practice:

  • A receipt or eReceipt makes the return frictionless. Without one, the item still has to clear the no-receipt rules (ID required, refund issued as an Office Depot Return Card at the lowest retail price during the preceding 90 days).
  • The Anytime window does not override the condition rule for the item's parent category. An assembled Office Depot brand desk still needs to be unassembled to return — even within the Anytime window — because the underlying Furniture rule requires unassembled, in-box.
  • The Anytime guarantee is a strong reason to buy the store brand over a name brand for low-stakes items. A name-brand binder past 90 days is non-returnable. The Office Depot brand version of the same binder is.

The Anytime brand guarantee functionally puts Office Depot in the same tier as L.L. Bean's one-year-plus-defective satisfaction guarantee (see L.L. Bean return policy), but only on house-brand SKUs. Most Office Depot shoppers do not realize this benefit exists.

The Returns page lists two explicit "Not returnable" categories:

Two other implicit non-returnable categories appear elsewhere in the policy:

  • Special order and custom-made items are not returnable "unless damaged upon receipt." Custom business cards, custom rubber stamps, custom name badges, made-to-order furniture — none of those are returnable for change of mind.
  • Tech Services purchases (computer setup, data transfer, virus removal, in-store tech help) are explicitly "excluded from this return policy and are subject to the terms and conditions for each service."

If you bought any of these, the policy clock never even starts.

Mail returns vs. in-store returns

Office Depot accepts returns through two channels for online orders and one channel for in-store orders. The fastest refund processing is always in-store: the Returns page explicitly notes that "items returned in our stores will have faster refund processing times" than mail returns.

For mail returns, the customer is responsible for packaging the item correctly. The Returns page warns:

Please make sure that you package, label, and ship the correct item, including all return documentation for a refund.

A misrouted return is held for 10 days and then donated or recycled. Office Depot and Veyer — Office Depot's affiliate supply-chain company — are not liable for items shipped to the wrong address or items sent without return documentation. Office Depot's refund method is tied to the original payment method, with a few quirks worth knowing. From the Returns FAQ:

The 10-day check rule is one of those quirks that catches small-business buyers. All returns without an Original Receipt require valid government identification.

The "Original Receipt" definition in the policy is broad — it includes a register receipt, an eReceipt, a packing slip, or an order confirmation. If you have any of those, you have a receipt for refund purposes. The eReceipt is the easiest one to recover: every Office Depot Rewards transaction is automatically logged to your member profile, accessible from the website or app.

If you have no receipt of any kind, the refund and product rules are:

  • Technology products without Original Receipt: not eligible for return.
  • Software, CDs, DVDs, and Video Games without Original Receipt: exact-item exchange only.

That last bullet is the punishing one. Office Depot operates an in-store technology services business — computer setup, virus removal, data transfer, printer setup, and remote support. The Returns page explicitly excludes Tech Services from the standard return policy:

In practice, that means Tech Services purchases are governed by the individual service terms you agreed to when you booked the appointment.
